Lake Manyara National Park sits at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment and is famous for its mix of habitats: a soda lake, groundwater forest and acacia woodlands. Though only 330 km², it delivers varied safari experiences within a short drive from Arusha.
The park’s shallow alkaline lake attracts vast flocks of flamingos in the rainy season, turning the shore a vivid pink. Hippos laze at the water’s edge and elephant herds graze nearby. Birdwatchers will spot pelicans, storks and over 400 other species, making Manyara a Ramsar‑listed wetland.
Under the forest canopy you’ll encounter troops of baboons and blue monkeys. Manyara is also famous for its tree‑climbing lions—an unusual behaviour where pride males rest on acacia branches. Giraffes, zebra and buffalo roam the open plains, all framed by the towering escarpment.
This compact park is ideal for half‑day or full‑day safaris. Its proximity to Arusha makes it a popular addition to northern‑circuit packages, offering a quick taste of Tanzania’s wildlife diversity before heading deeper into the Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
